Top 5 things to do in Stamford

Stamford in Lincolnshire is one of those places that feels like someone picked up a little town in the Cotswolds and placed it in the middle of the Lincolnshire countryside.

It’s a real gem to have Stamford so close to Peterborough and the barber shop, because not only is it stunning, but it’s also full of quirky, cool historic places to visit.

Cobblestone streets and more coffee shops than you can shake a stick at (that always seem to be busy).

Our top 5 things to do in Stamford include some of the more well-known places, as well as a few lesser-known ones, so hopefully, there’s something for everyone in this list.

Burghley House

Burghley house top 5 things to do in Stamford

We’re going straight in with Burghley House because it’s hard to miss. We’ve included it in our top 5 because there is so much more to see beyond the house.

Burghley House is a stunning sixteenth-century stately home that was built to honour Queen Elizabeth. The backdrop to many a feature film, including Pride and Prejudice. The house is open daily to visit (excluding Fridays) if you fancy a tour of the beautiful stately rooms adorned with murals, paintings, rich tapestries and art. Each room with it’s own theme you’ll find it hard not to drop your jaw and just how exquisite it is.

If you prefer to be outside, there are huge grounds to explore around the parkland, where you can take a picnic, and if you’re lucky, watch the deer.

There’s also an adventure play area for children and a water garden to keep them busy. Both are bookable in advance and incur a charge.

Parking at Burghley is, however, completely free, so you can park up, walk around the Deer Park and grounds, take in the magnificent views and have a picnic without paying a penny!

If you’d rather have coffee and cake or a spot of lunch, then you have the choice of the café or the restaurant.

Check online for events throughout the year, including their infamous Ibiza Party, film screenings, and the Burghley Horse Trials.

St Martin’s Antique Centre

St Martins Antique Centre - Top 5 things to do in Stamford

If you like vintage and old antiques you’ll love St Martin’s Antique Centre. The beauty of this place is that it’s full of different traders so there’s an eclectic mix of 80s vintage memorabilia, to traditional Antique Grandfather clocks and everything in between. You can definitely while away an hour or two in here before a short stroll into town for coffee (or perhaps treat yourself to afternoon tea at The George), but we can’t promise you won’t leave without something in hand! It’s also open on a Sunday if you fancy venturing into Stamford on one of its quieter days, as the town can get quite busy on Fridays and Saturdays.

Stamford Meadows

Did you know that Stamford has a vast green space in the centre of the town? Great if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the high street for a bit. Stamford Meadows is an idyllic place to take your lunch and watch the wildlife alongside the pretty millstream that runs through it. The views from here of the town are picturesque and worth a visit if you fancy yourself a bit of a photographer. Events run regularly throughout the year, from antique fairs to car shows.

If you want somewhere with a few more activities for the kids, north of the town centre is Stamford Recreation Ground, which includes tennis courts (hire is £5 per hour per court), a children’s play area, an outdoor gym and a skate park.

Stamford Castle

Stamford Castle - Top 5 things to do in Stamford

Yep, Stamford has a castle! Well, a ruined one. Blink and you’d miss it, which is why it made our top 5. As you head from the town down to Stamford Meadows, look to your right and you’ll see, in the car park, the ruined walls that remain. Just 3 arches and one wall, with a plaque offering a little insight into this 1000-year-old castle. The three arches, they think, formed part of the Great Hall. It won’t take you more than a few moments to investigate and perhaps take the odd selfie, but it’s worth noticing on your way into the meadows.

Stamford Ghost Tour

Being fairly old and full of history, it’s probably no surprise that Stamford has several tours to while away a day or evening. But if you’re going to do a tour, why not make it fun with a Spooky Tour!

Stamford Guided tours offer this with upcoming dates for Halloween soon to be released, or you can book a private tour all year round. Dick Turpin and Cassandra King (also known as guides Jim and Nicola) will show you around the town and share some of the more unusual tales from Stamford’s past. You might even see a Ghost or two… if you believe in that kind of thing!

If you’d rather have a less thrilling but more exhilarating experience, you can book one of their daytime tours, taking place from April through October, several times a week.

To book, head to their website: https://www.thestamfordtownguidedtours.co.uk/
