What are the different types of men’s hairlines? And do they change over time?

Let’s talk hairlines.

Why? Because it’s a topic that comes up regularly, especially with our younger clients, who often ask whether their hairline is ‘normal’.

They often think they’re experiencing hair loss, but with the latest trend for big fringes, all that’s really happening is they can see their hairline through their fringe.

It’s a trend that’s been around for some time now and we don’t see it going anywhere anytime soon. So, they’ve never actually looked at their hairline in any detail; some teenagers don’t completely understand what it is or where it is. Because of that, they worry that it’s too high or balding, which is rarely the case.

To see your hairline, first, pull your fringe completely back from your head. At the top of your forehead, you’ll see that your hair has a distinct line where it starts to grow. Some hairlines are naturally uneven. But  generally, they fall into one of the following categories:

So, let’s explain in more detail the different types of hairlines, and why your hairline is totally normal for you.

Are there different types of hairlines?

Yes – actually, there are lots of different categories of hairlines that we see in both men and women.

Women’s hairlines tend to be straighter and lower, but equally they can peak and be high too.

Men can have low, medium and high hairlines; they can also have a receding hairline (the ‘m’ shape you often see) or something called a cowlick, which is where the hair spirals at the hairline.

All of these are normal – there is not ‘one’ type of hairline that any one person should have.

You’re born with your hairline, and you’re genetically predisposed to a hairline type through BOTH your parents, not just your father.

Can your hairline type change over time?

The answer is also yes! Your hairline can change over time. Your hairline can recede at any age and it can thin. A low hairline can become higher.  That doesn’t mean it will keep receding, nor does it mean everyone’s hairline recedes. Your hairline is very individual to you. It can also by effected by environmental factors that we’ll go more into below.

What causes your hairline to recede?

The biggest one is genetics. If your hairline is going to recede because of genetics, there isn’t a lot you can do about it. However, there are some things you can do to improve the condition and the stability of your hair:

Nourishing Diet

Your hair is made of keratin, which is a protein. So, protein-rich foods are good for strong, healthy hair. Other vitamins and minerals your hair likes are iron, zinc, biotin and vitamin D.

Use shampoo to wash your hair

You might be thinking this is pretty basic knowledge, but how many of you wash your hair with whatever’s to hand? i.e. your shower gel? Look for sulphate and alcohol-free shampoo as these are gentler on your hair.  You can also look for caffeine-based shampoos to help with hair retention if you’re experiencing some hair loss.

Another tip – if you tend to get a dry or flaky scalp, try not to over wash your hair. Aim for 2-3 times a week.

Sleep is rejuvenating

When you’re in a deep sleep, it’s a chance for your body to reboot and reset. It regenerates itself. Getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep every night will provide your body with the support it needs for healthy hair growth.

Stress can induce hair loss

Although chronic stress can induce hair loss, it’s usually temporary, so do not fear! Try to put in place weekly stress-reducing activities like walking the dog, listening to music or trying a bit of meditation. Your body and your hair will thank you for it!

Avoid too much heat styling

If you’re an avid fan of blow drying or applying heat to your hair every day you might start to notice more broken hair. Give your hair a break, factor in some air-drying days, and make sure you use hair protection when you are using very hot tools.

Head Massages

Head massages are scientifically proven to stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles, bringing more nutrients and oxygen to your scalp. Some research even suggests that a daily scalp massage can lead to thicker hair over time.

It of course is also a huge source of stress relief! You can book in for a head massage as part of our Full Monty service as Seven.

In Summary

Remember – it’s normal for hair to recede or thin as we age. It’s all a part of the ageing process. For some people, it happens sooner than others. For some, it doesn’t happen at all.

And if you do notice any sudden visible bald patches, or dramatic hair loss that you’re concerned about, consult your GP in case there is some other underlying health condition.
